Portable Appliance Testing (PAT)

Every year, about 30 people die from electrical accidents and many more are injured. About a quarter of these incidents involve portable appliances. The Electricity at Work Regulations place a legal responsibility on employers and employees to comply with the provisions of the regulations and take reasonably practicable steps to ensure that no danger results from the use of such equipment. In effect, this requires the implementation of a systematic and regular program of maintenance, inspection and testing.

Oakmead Electrical are able to provide such a service with fully approved PAT testers and modern test equipment.

Certification to Building Regulations Part P

From 1 January 2005, new legally enforced rules apply for home electrical installations. In particular, these affect all major changes to your home wiring or any changes to wiring in the kitchen, bathroom or garden. On completion the certified installer should furnish you with a certificate to show compliance to Part P of the Building Regulations. This is an important document as it can affect your ability to sell your home.

Oakmead Electrical installers are certified to Part P and can provide you with appropriate certificates on completion of the work.

Home Buyers Survey

If you're looking to sell your property, Oakmead Electrical can undertake the electrical testing for a Home Buyer's Survey.

Electrical Installation Testing

As all electrical installations deteriorate over time, perhaps due to wear, overloading, etc. legislation requires that they be maintained in a safe condition. Furthermore, this may be a requirement set by licensing authorities, public bodies, insurance companies and mortgage lenders.

Specifically, Regulation 4(2) of The Electricity at Work Act (1989) and the Memorandum of Guidance published by the Health and Safety Executive stipulate that all installations meet British Standard BS 7671 as laid out in The IEE Wiring Regulations (16th edition). This covers private accommodation as well as public and commercial buildings.

With periodic inspection, you can provide for the safety of persons against the effects of electric shock and burns plus the protection of property against damage. Oakmead Electrical provide a full electrical installation inspection service that can give confirmation that an installation is not damaged nor unduly deteriorated. It will identify installation defects and non-compliance with Regulations.

The tests will involve an interruption to the power supply, and it may be necessary to move furniture or other obstacles in order to gain access to sockets, light fittings, etc. Oakmead Electrical will endeavour to keep any disruption to a minimum.

The duration of the tests ranges from a few hours for a domestic house to several days for a large complex.

On completion, we provide you with a test certificate and a report including a schedule of Inspections and Test Results plus a list of recommended actions to bring the installation up to standard. We can also advise on electrical safety issues and offer a repair service.

The recommended frequency of inspections depends upon the type of property ranging from three months for a building site to ten years for a domestic house.
